An agglomeration of unusual places to stay in the grounds of PEKES:- tudor manor house, gatekeepers lodge, cowsheds and an oast which share the use of the exotic indoor heated swimming pool, sauna/jacuzzi, hard tennis court and extensive grounds.
The Oast was converted into a Dower House by Eva's grandfather and, like the other properties in the grounds, still feels very much part of a family home with ancestral portraits and heirlooms at every turn. An enormous picture of Eva's mother Jasmine looking unflappable, having paused mid-charleston for her portrait, adds a lively presence to the landing, off which are two roundel bedrooms.
The 90 yrs since their conversion, have allowed the various buildings to assume the character of gingerbread cottages, with none of the empty minimalist harshness of modern conversions. For instance the Cowsheds and the Oast share a similar quirkiness, with the cows now replaced by Corinthian columns, barrel vaulted ceilings and Delft tiled fireplaces.
