The old Lock-Up is larger and a lot more pleasant than its name suggests, having been built to house, not just prisoners, but also the magistrate who put them there. Later it became the local Police Station and still has the old charge and bail books, as graphic reminders that crime was just as gruesome in Victorian times. The atmosphere has now been transformed, as have the facilities in the cells. Its unlikely the notorious Wigwell Grange murderer enjoyed a double air bath with his mistress, before being shipped off to the gallows.
Despite the extra comforts, masochists will find some of the cells little changed, with barrel vaulted rooves, small windows, iron studded doors with locks only on the outside and a trapdoor for feeding. Bondage enthusiasts will have to provide their own manacles. Outside you can see where the drunks were sluiced down to make them sweet enough to lock up.
