This model farm has a noble history, having been built in 1850 by the Earl of Pembroke who lived in nearby Wilton House not far from Salisbury. It then passed through the hands of Lord Abergavenny and the Duke of Newcastle before finally ending up in the hands of common folk in 1999! In its heyday what is now a grassy green courtyard was filled with cattle and their pens, and the enclosing elegant banded brick, flint and greenstone buildings were used for milking, hay storage and housing the heavy horses.

Peter and Gail converted most of the buildings in 2000 with great attention to detail. Peter is an engineer by profession who loves timber (in his spare time he builds harpsichords) and is also an enthusiast for eco-friendly building methods. Geo-thermal heating ensures your stay in The Stables will be a warm one without costing the Earth in all senses of the word. Farming 1000 acres needed a lot of energy and in the days before coal, oil and gas the Heavy Horse was the answer, which explains the extensive range of stables. In The Hayloft it is the bathroom which attracts most attention being truly spectacular - the double spa bath merits a bottle of bubbly and is likely to prove a highlight of your stay. With an engineer's attention to detail even the mirrors are heated, so you won't get too steamed up! High quality woodwork is found throughout, all completed in the harpsichord workshop including masses of honey coloured roof trusses, purlins and queen posts.

Though you won't be woken by the sound of lowing cattle in the courtyard, Ebblesway's link to farming continues with plenty for those with animal passions - donkeys, horses, chickens and occasionally sheep and cattle are kept in other unconverted farm buildings. The attractive Ebble Valley offers plenty for walkers and cyclists (bikes for hire) with characterful pubs and restaurants in small villages within easy reach. If you have had enough of muddy boots, the delights of Wilton and Salisbury are on your doorstep, with the New Forest only a few miles further away.
