Your Hosts:Mrs Sylvia and Mr Beverley Griffiths
The Hill family, who owned most of the land in this area, were very keen on folies, as can be seen from a walk in the extensive grounds of Hawkstone Park - towers, grottoes, castles and obelisks at every turn.
The Citadel was built, not as a folly but as a dower house, although having your mother-in-law living at the end of the garden may be thought a folly, even if the garden is over a mile long!
On passing beyond the heavy front door, it is clear that the house was built to be enjoyed, not to repel invaders - no arrow slits here! Instead, plenty of large paired gothic windows, allow the light to flood in and enable guests to enjoy the stunning views from the round turret bedrooms over the evocatively named Elysian and Grotto Hills.
